I really appreciated this drum lesson by Ginger Baker. Ginger’s a very experienced drummer who has played with Cream and Blind Faith and he has plenty to share. The lesson is quite long but it really is quite simple. I love the way Ginger’s explaining how very basic single concept (such as Paradiddles and the double stroke roll, dubbed Mommy Daddy roll in this video!) can be used on the drumset to form elaborate patterns that sound incredible.
Let’s check out this example of moving the beat around the single paradiddle:
RLRR LRLL RLRR LRLL
Shifting 1 beat:
LRRL RLLR LRRL RLLR
Shifting 2 beats:
RRLR LLRL RRLR LLRL
Shifting 3 beats:
RLRL LRLR RLRL LRLR
This shifting made the paradiddle a lot more interesting indeed!
I’ll be posting part 2 soon, in the meanwhile have a look and let me know.
